Get Set for Seed Starting!

I know you want lots of cheap new plants for your garden. Spoiler alert: it all begins with seed starting. Soil blocking makes for healthier seedlings, and it is so much easier than you think. But wait—before you jump into action, you need your trusty sidekicks. Here’s a quick list of five essential items you need to kick off your seed-starting adventure using soil blocks.

Want to skip right to the good part? Here is a list to all of the products I use to start seeds in soil blocks. I am an Amazon affiliate & this link supports my page. I have tried and tested ALL of these products for years.

1. Heat Mats: The Cozy Warmth

First on the list is a heat mat. Let’s face it—your seeds don’t appreciate a chill any more than you do. A heat mat provides the warmth necessary for germination, ensuring your seeds are snug as bugs, ready to sprout at the right temperature.

2. Trays: The Foundation of Your Garden

Next up, trays! You need sturdy trays to hold your soil blocks. This will also be how you water your seedlings. Trays help organize your seeds & sit on top of the heat mats, allowing gentle warmth to penetrate into the blocks, spurring germination.

3. Soil: The Heart of Your Soil Blocks

Speaking of soil blocks, let’s chat about the most important component—soil. Opt for a well-mixed seed-starting blend, rich in nutrients, to help your precious seedlings thrive. Trust us, they’ll thank you (even if they can’t speak). Choose a light, airy mix. You’ll probably want to “screen” your mix to take out any big chunks, since this can inhibit a tight block.

4. Soil Blocker: Your Block Builder

You’ll also need a soil blocker to form those perfect little cubes. This nifty tool shapes the soil into compact blocks, providing seedlings with solid footing as they grow, much like a firm handshake during introductions. Trust me, investment in a good blocker is important. I’ve tried the cheap version. It isn’t worth the wasted time!

5. LED Grow Lights: Brightening the Path

Last but certainly not least, make sure you have LED grow lights. These brilliant companions offer the necessary light spectrum for your seedlings to flourish. They will nurture your little green darlings, ensuring they grow up big and strong, even if the sun is playing hard to get.

With these five essential items ready for action, you’re all set to start your seed-growing journey. I have tried and tested all of the supplies in this list, rest assured they are winners.
